Belgian ISPs start using superspeed network

BNIX, the Belgian Internet exchange, ready to provide four times more capacity and five times more speed.

PRESS RELEASE - Brussels, 6th July 2010 - Starting this month, Internet and content providers that are members of the Belgian Internet exchange BNIX (Belgian National Internet eXchange), shall be able to transport four times more Internet traffic, thanks to a new network. The data traffic speed shall also be five times higher than before. Belnet, which is responsible for the Internet exchange, is therefore anticipating the expected further increase in Internet usage in our country.

The Internet exchange BNIX (Belgian National Internet eXchange) is where all ISPs (such as Belgacom and Telenet), content providers and large enterprises - such as VRT and Dexia - exchange Internet traffic within Belgium. Participating organisations can download and upload mails, videos and other Internet traffic locally and more quickly via the Internet exchange. BNIX currently has 43 participants, but Belnet expects that there could be twice as many persons connected within three years.

Belnet took a decision to set up a new BNIX network to absorb the growth of participants as well as the growth in Internet capacity in our country. That network was extensively tested in recent months and now the 43 connected participants have also migrated to the new, higher-performance network. From now on, they can benefit from all the advantages that the new network offers, such as high capacity, stability, full redundancy and high port density.

New logo and website

Apart from the launch of the new network, BNIX has also launched a new logo and website (www.bnix.net). The logo symbolises the new BNIX platform - more redundant and more energy efficient - and also reflects the dynamics between the various participants.

The new BNIX network consists of two very powerful and fully redundant switches, each with a capacity of 3.5 terabit per second, nearly five times the previous one. The equipment will consume 45 percent less power than the current ones and will require 53 percent less cooling.

Pierre Bruyère, director of Belnet, is looking to the future with this new platform: “We have installed this new platform in order to respond to the evolution of the Belgian Internet. With this, we are now all set to allow Belgian networks to communicate with each other smoothly and in an ecologically responsible manner in future.”

The devices connect the 43 BNIX customers to each other and to the Internet. One unit is located in the data centre of Level 3 in Evere and the other in that of Interxion in Zaventem. Companies with computer infrastructures housed in the datacenter in Diegem LCL may also connect from Diegem to BNIX from now on.
